This is the first vehicle I have owned that this happens with - others I have driven seem to have a much "softer" stop , when turning the wheel to its limits. (with minimal noise)
Or is this an standard characteristic of the electric assist steering?

Mine does this as well. I never thought of it as abnormal. The electronic assist makes it so easy to turn the wheels, there is less resistance when you are fully turned, giving the clunk. This is my opinion. Seems normal to me.
