The hatchback door on my 2009 Venza does not always open. I've kept a log, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. (In the following scenerios, assume I have the car key in my possession.) I can be: *Sitting in the driver's seat with the engine off, and depress the back door open button on the dash panel -- I receive 2 beeps and the door remains closed *Sitting in the driver's seat, having pressed on the brake pedal and started the engine; the car remain in park and my foot is off the brake pedal. I depress the back door open button on the dash panel, and receive 2 beeps while the door remains closed *With the engine off, I push the open pad on the back door itself. I receive two beeps and the door remains closed. I have had similar problems using the Smart Key. Once the door fails to open, several attempts at pushing the open buttons fail. I can only open it after driving it a short distance. Weather does not seem to be a factor, but this always happens after the car has been sitting for a few hours. I've taken it to the dealer immediately after a failed opening. Of course, the back door opens just fine when I reach the dealer -- this, again, is because I have driven it a while in between failed attempts. Any ideas?

My rear hatch opens by itself when using the dash button or the smart key but when I open it manually I have to lift it it by hand. I think that's the way it's supposed to work, isn't it?

The door on our Venza operates as expected. The remote and the front button work every time. I suspect you may have a problem that requires examination by a professional.

I would say yes! Mine operates the same in the scenarios you mentioned.

I've discovered what, I think, to be a problem with opening my hatchback door. It may be connected to the door locks. When I have problem opening the hatchback -- through either the use of the dash board button, the Smart Key, or the finger tab on the hatchback door itself -- I find that if I push the button to unlock all doors, the hatchback will then operate and open fine whether the engine is on or off. Shouldn't it work without my having to unlock all of the doors?

| Yes. It should work doors locked or unlocked.

Thanks for the replies to my messages. I have this fear Toyota will say this is "operator error," but you have provided substance to my complaints -- and I have kept a written log of daily problems in attempting to open the hatchback for the past two months. I will let you all know what the decision is... /j
